777 = 7%…and no $700Bln deal….What a day for… Tuesday, Sep 30 2008

the UnUnited States of America….

The boys and girls of Wall Street, the politicians on Capitol Hill and every American saw their 7 Up yesterday.  The Dow Jones index of the top 30 US stocks had its largest numerical one day loss  EVER - 777 points, which was nearly 7% of its total on Monday Morning and the much heralded $700Bln deal never happened…..and they say lucky number 7 ……..ooops…back to the drawing board…but not today as its a Holiday.. :-) impending financial doom, but we must still respect our Holidays….. God Bless The very Un U S of A….

Its a Holiday here tomorrow too (Cyprus Independence Day), isn’t great getting a public holiday right in the middle of the week ? Two days on, a day off and two days back at work. Why can’t all weeks be like that ? In fact I might just start a campaign… 2, 1, 2 every week….sign here ……No Cyprus footie tonight..more on teams ..later in the week..

Your Protaras Penthouse…..only needs painting……. Wednesday, Sep 24 2008

“Your Penthouse in Protaras…is nearly finished…. it only needs painting…”

My cousin called at the weekend to say his Develepor had called him to say his Penthouse was nearly finished and only needed painting. Decca (my cousin) asked if it be possible for me to pop up and check out progress. The apartment isn’t due for completion until the end of the year so the phone call seemed a  little bit previous……and so it proved…..but never mind nothing like a keen developer. All things look set for the year end completion..and the views are stunning.

That is Green Bay in front, a fabulous place for snorkelling and a great loaction to learn to scuba dive. Up the hill and you are in to Cape Greco, and around the corner you come across Fig Tree Bay and the beaches of Protaras.

Decca wasn’t too surprised, that there was a wee bit more than a lick of paint before the penthouse is completed, but he was happy that things are progressing to plan and not behind schedule like so many off plan developments. Choose your developer wisely….big isn’t always best, a history of delivery and customer satisfaction can save you ££££’s in the future and loks of heart ache and time.

Blah…that Jo…..so close in Nicosia for Omonia Friday, Sep 19 2008

Poor old Omonia they came so close to memoral victory last night….

Man City squandered lots of chances and played poorly for most of the game. The multi-million £ talent on display was rather wasteful to say the least. The atmosphere was electric, the pitch rather patchy and the temperature alot warmer than back in dear old Manc chester (even though the light Blues had 3 Brazilains strutting their stuff).

0-0 at half time and the fanatical Nicosian supporters in the GSP stadium were going mental. The volume and passsion of their singing encouraged, by their chief conductor on loud hailler reminded me of the days of REAL passion in the Old English 1st Division when we had to stand on the terraces in the rain, queue all of half time for a cup of Bovril and a pee aginst a concrete wall that passed as the Gents.

They LOVE their football in Cyprus and they love their teams. Omonia backed by local business men (not shieks from the sands) the local Left wing political party (AKEL) and the President of the Republic have prehaps the longest footballing pedigree on the island.

A fabulous free kick after 49 minutes saw the Nicosia side one up, but with still 40 minutes to play, and the lead lasted only 10 minutes before one of the Latin american imports to Machester equalised. Jo REALLY should have had himself at least a hat-trick last night but had to settle for a Brace when he got the winner after 72mins.

All is not lost for the spirited Omonians and they will no doubt have a large and passionate following at the the Middle Eastlands Stadium for the return fixture …. theres is all still to play for and only one goal in it …… one goal was never enough for Shankley and Cloughie to rest on their laurels…so come on the GREENS….from Nicosia…

Watch it …Sparky you have the return leg to get over yet

  What the managers said

What a night for Cyprus Football Wednesday, Sep 17 2008

Well it was a truely historic night for Cyprus Football as Anorthosis Famagusta (a team exiled in Larnaca) was the first Cypriot team to compete in the Group stgaes of the Champions League…and my they did them selves proud, hannging on for a draw against much fancied Bremen. The Werder Bremen coach had the quote of the night…..”We seem to have only one motto: prepare well, play well, fall apart well.” Thanks Mr Schaaf that made me smile….. we look forward to welcoming you to Larnaca very very soon to enjoy the atmosphere of the Blue Hools. Our very own Ketsbaia had a wee bit more to say…….

Werder Bremen 0-0 Anorthosis Famagusta

Temuri Ketsbaia: “We have five more very difficult matches and we want to play as well as we did today in them. We were concentrated right from the outset and were very tight defensively. I played Traianos Dellas from the start and he proved that I was right to put my faith in him by putting in a very committed display.”

Unfortunately over in the UEFA Cup APOEL Nicosia came unstuck 1-4 against another German outfit – Schalke.  Shame because IMHO the score line flattered the German team…still looks like its all over for this particular Nicosia team…..which only leaves their neighbours and BITTER, BITTER rivals Omonia to do battle with Manchester City and their Billions  on Thursday……

1st Rain for Months Monday, Sep 15 2008

Well the English football team astonished all and sundry on Wednesday night; they actually played well and had the rub of the green to pull off a famous victory … well done to one and all..onwards and upwards.

Of even greater significance to rain partched Cyprus is that I can register the 1st rain shower of the Autumn…amen I hear you all cry. The news comes with two very significant caveats I’m afraid; the heavy rain lasted less than 5 minutes, and the consequence for most of my neighbours (both locals and ex-pats) was that it was an excuse to get out the hose and wash down the drives and patios because all the summer dust had been washed off the roofs….. So as I type on Monday afternoon the 5 minute shower on Saturday afternoon will have actually DEPLETED the water suppy, such is the paradox of Cyprus…but so long as we all parch with a clean patio many will be happy ……

As promised a fab village mansion in the hinterland of Larnaca….20 minutes from Larnaca Airport and 30 minutes from Nicosia, and Limassol….

We also have this absolute bargain…..an investment for some of one’s Lehman Brothers severence pay…

Mid Week Mayhem Wednesday, Sep 10 2008

Wandering around Larnaca this morning in the early morning sunshine, makes one glad to be alive…and in deed we all ARE. The work at CERN seems to have started with out us all disappearing into a black hole..so ho hum… its not the end of the world and the England football will have to face Croatia tonight and we WILL all have to go to work tomorrow.

The Cyprus national football team are one of the few not playing this evening, but my they were unlucky against the World Champions Italy on Saturday losing 1-2 in the final minutes….The game was hosted by the Cyprus champions Anorthosis at the Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca town http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonis_Papadopoulos_Stadium

Good luck to all teams tonight and lets hope we some good football and players proud to wear their national team colours.

Back to Normal….. Monday, Sep 8 2008

……or what ever “normal” is :-) ….. First full week of September but it is still very warm and humid down on the south coast of Cyprus. Limassol through Larnaca and beyond to Protaras and Paralimni, humdity levels are high but the nights are becoming cooler and the wurrr of the air conditioning compressor does not run all night.

We made a positive decision NOT to install A/C in our home and for most of the year it is fine. We have a breeze all night, most night s from the sea and with our windows and patio doors open we survive the few weeks of peak summer heat, only occassionally do I regret the not hearing our own compressor wurrr.

This lovely house in the picturesque village of Lefkara has recently been reduced in price for a quick sale. Lefkara www.lefkara.org.cy is close enough to all major towns and the beaches, but at such an altitude that the humidity of the coast does not bother you….contcat us for a great price on a fabulous special property.
